BEFORE WE SUCCEEDED finally in making it through all the hugging and handshakes that ended the evening and trudged the stairs to our room, Tommy cornered us in the moonlit garden.

‘What are you two doing tomorrow?’ he asked.

Tomorrow? What was that?

‘If you don’t mind the suggestion, I have a wonderful man who can take you around for the day on a canoe trip you’ll never forget.’

‘Uh… well…’ I began but was beaten by Arnie who consented – blearily.

‘Done! What time?’

To my utter astonishment, Tommy slipped out his cellphone and dialled the man.

‘Does he realise it’s 1:00 am?’ I whispered to Arnie who didn’t seem to register that that might be a problem.

It must have been mine only, since Tommy was smiling at the end of the call and his man fully prepared to collect us six hours hence.

‘How quickly do you think we can sleep?’ I asked my husband as we flung ourselves into the carved and creaking bed. His answer was a snore.
